Although some of the tools to make stained glass windows have been improved, the windows are still hand crafted as they were centuries ago.
Here are the steps I take to make each stained glass piece:
· The first step of the process involves drawing a design, once a design has been chosen it is then drawn to scale. I draw all of my own designs so the skys the limit!
· Glass is then chosen from hundreds of textures and colours to make the individual pieces of the glass picture.
· The pattern is traced onto the glass using a sharpie marker.
· The glass is scored following the pattern pieces using a glass cutter and then broken using special tools called running pliers
· The individual pieces are then grinded to roughen up the edge of each piece of glass using a glass grinder
· Once the stained glass pieces fit together perfectly each piece is ready to be foiled.
· Each piece of glass is wrapped in an adhesive backed copper foil tape to provide metal seams. These seams provide a base where the solder
is applied to create the internal structure that holds the piece together.
· Using a soldering iron and solder made especially for stained glass fabrication, the pieces are soldered together.
· When the piece is completely soldered, it is cleaned to remove all flux and marks.
· The piece is framed using Zinc Came to add a nice frame and also to add strength to the piece.
· Loops are then soldered to the top of frame for ease in hanging or left as is to insert into a window frame.
